چکیده

The accumulative levels of SO2 in soil and plant's leaves around an oil refinery were monitored. Four different sites around the refinery area were chosen; west, south east, north east and the northern side. The refinery southern side was not accessible. In addition to the soil samples, leaves samples of the dominant plants species Myoporum pictum were randomly collected from all sites. Highly significant levels of sulfate were found in soil and plant leaves samples at all sites compared to the control. The highest level of sulfate in soil (9,000 ± 1200 μg g) and plant's leaves (65,774 ± 320 μg g) were found in the southern east side. This high content of sulfate indicates high levels of air contamination with SO2 around the refinery which negatively effects the environment and public health at this populated area.

Sulfur dioxide emissions in Iran and environmental impacts of sulfur recovery plant in Tabriz Oil Refinery

Background: Combustion of fossil fuels contributes to sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. To deal with this issue, the government of Iran has appointed the oil refineries to upgrade their installations and produce high quality fuels. Thus, this study investigated the status of SO2 emissions in Iran and the capability of advanced technologies to control SO2 emissions. Methods: The status of SO2 em...

A Preliminary Assessment of Dispersion Level of SO2 in Fars Industrial Region, South of Iran, by GIS

The city of Zarghan is located 25 km northeast of Shiraz, southern Iran. Zarghan is affected by numerous pollution sources such as oil refinery, an industrial park, and Shiraz-Tehran highway. The numerous contaminating sources around Zarghan can cause serious local air pollution. Sulfur dioxide gas is an important index of air pollution in cities. Therefore, in order to control and manage Zargh...

Modeling of sulfur dioxide emissions in Ahvaz City, southwest of Iran during 2013

Sulfur dioxide has two important sources in the atmosphere and this is why most of scientists believe in a geographic split in the globe. Power plants, major emitter of SO2, are located in north hemisphere such as in Russia, China, Canada and the USA. In south hemisphere, phytoplankton produces a massive amount of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). Then these types of reduced...
